Retailers use Wi-Fi to spy on shoppers

QUESTION

Hi, Kim. I read a story about Nordstrom wanting to track people’s smartphones. Is this true? Do you have any more details about this?
-Reed, from Greeley, CO, listens to my national radio show on KFKA 1310 AM.

ANSWER

I know exactly what you’re talking about, Reed. Department store Nordstrom is working on a new pilot program to track shoppers’ smartphones and tablets while they’re in the store.

This will let Nordstrom see what sections of the store people visit and how long they stay. That’s a dream come true for retailers.

Some people believe that someday stores could use that information to hit you with targeted ads or “exclusive” deals. And you thought it was creepy when online retailers did it!

Nordstrom is only testing this in a few stores right now, but if it works, you can rest assured other companies will jump on the bandwagon. You’re not totally powerless, though; there are ways to stop it.
